How does Er:YAG Laser Work?

How does Er:YAG Laser Work?

Er:YAG Ablative Fractional Laser treatment is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves the use of a laser beam to resurface the skin. This laser is capable of removing thin layers of the skin by breaking down the molecules that hold the skin cells together. The laser beam also stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that makes the skin appear firmer and younger. The treatment is safe, effective, and can be performed on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, hands, and chest.

The procedure takes around 30 minutes to an hour and is performed by a qualified and certified laser therapist. The laser emits short pulses of high-energy light that pass through the top layers of the skin and penetrate deeper layers, promoting the production of collagen, a structural protein that gives skin its plump and elastic texture. The treatment is pain-free, and most people report a mild warming sensation during the procedure. However, some may feel slight discomfort, but it is usually well-tolerated.

What are the Advantages?

Er:YAG laser skin therapy is a very popular cosmetic treatment that uses a specific type of laser to rejuvenate and resurface the skin. The Er:YAG laser emits a wavelength of light that is absorbed by water in the skin, causing the water molecules to heat up and vaporize. This process helps to remove the outermost layer of skin, revealing fresher, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin beneath.

Here are some of the advantages of Er:YAG laser skin therapy:

  1. Non-invasive: Er:YAG laser skin therapy is a non-invasive procedure, which means it doesn’t require any incisions or injections.
  2. Effective: Er:YAG laser skin therapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of skin issues, including fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and acne scars. The laser can be customized to target specific areas of the skin, which means that the treatment can be tailored to each individual’s needs.
  3. Fast recovery: The recovery time for Er:YAG laser skin therapy is relatively short, with most patients experiencing only mild redness and swelling for a few days after the treatment. This means that patients can resume their normal activities quickly, without having to take time off work or avoid social events.
  4. Safe: Er:YAG laser skin therapy is a safe procedure when performed by a trained and experienced professional. The laser is precise and controlled, which means that it only targets the areas of the skin that need to be treated. This reduces the risk of complications and side effects, such as scarring or infection.

Post treatment expectations and care after Er:Yag Laser Treatment

Feel & Redness
It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You should use a cold compress or cold-water spray as needed. You may also expect to experience redness and / or purpura (epidermal bleeding) within the treated area for five to seven days.

Bathing / Activities
Avoid bathing with very hot water, strenuous exercise, and massage for 2–3 days post laser skin care treatment.

Washing
Wait at least 12 hours (next morning) to wash your face. Cleansing your face with a mild cleanser should be recommended by your therapist. Use the cleanser for the duration of the healing process.

DO NOT use any scrubs or irritants such as Retin-A, Benzoyl Peroxide, or any astringents. Skin always should be patted dry and NOT rubbed.

Hydrating
Apply moisturising or home care products recommended by your therapist a few times a day to keep the skin well moisturized. Using the right products will help the healing process beneficial to the laser skin rejuvenation. It may prevent your skin from peeling.

Makeup
Makeup should not be used for at least 5 days post treatment. Most makeup is moisturizing, which can sometimes prevent the peeling process. If makeup is absolutely needed, we recommend using new mineral makeup to reduce the possibility of infection.

No Sun Exposure
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 1–2 months post treatment in order to reduce the chance of discoloration of the skin and to prevent your skin from peeling. A powdered mineral makeup can be worn during the healing process as a sunscreen, but make sure the makeup is new and the brush is clean. Liquid sunscreens are not enough or recommended. Sun exposure delays the process of healing. Sun exposure can cause damage to the healing skin and cause undue pigmentation and textural changes that may be lasting.

No Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of post-surgical complications. DO NOT smoke for 48 hours prior to and at least 7 days after the treatment, otherwise healing time may be prolonged.
