Broken Capillaries Problems.

How to treat Broken Capillaries -what is worth knowing?

What are Broken Capillaries?

A capillary is a small blood vessel, which are found all over the body. When a blood vessel breaks just under the surface of the skin, it can leave red lines, which cause blemishes. While most causes of a broken capillary are not serious or painful, many people don’t like the appearance of the broken blood vessel on their skin.

Broken capillaries are often called spider veins, but their medical name is telangiectasia. The tiny reddish or purple veins have a threadlike appearance and are located just below the skin’s surface. They occur when the blood vessels widen and then suddenly narrow, which causes damage.

The diluted veins do not disappear and are easy to see. They look like small blood spots or small tree branches.

What causes Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries are caused by a wide array of reasons, such as sun damage, skin aging, rosacea, and genetics. Sometimes the cause is unknown. However, if your parents have broken capillaries then you stand a good chance of developing the condition too.

The sun damages the capillaries. It is believed that the ultraviolet rays weaken the blood vessels in the skin and makes them move closer to the skin’s surface. Rosacea is another cause of broken capillaries. The inflammation in the skin from the condition is another contributing factor.

As you get older, the more likely you are to see broken blood vessels. This is probably because aging skin is far weaker and thinner than young skin, which is plumped by collagen. When you are young, collagen is rapidly replaced, but aging and hormonal changes dramatically slow down collagen production, which, in effect, thins the skin.

What are the symptoms of Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries near the skin’s surface can cause some pain and discomfort. They can also result in swelling and bruising, which happens because blood is leaking from the vessel and into the surrounding tissue.

Signs and symptoms often include visible blood vessels along with redness and flushing of the skin. In some people, swelling and acne-like conditions appear, or the skin can thicken and have a bumpy surface. People with broken capillaries may experience stinging and burning of the skin.

Spider veins can be red, blue or purple and will stem out in different directions. Other than appearance, they seldom lead to any other health problems. However, because they often appear on the face, many people elect to have them treated. They are also common on the legs, but they can appear anywhere on the body.

Living with Broken Capillaries.

Like many other skin conditions, Broken Capillaries are not life threatening. However, due to the affect it has on personal appearance, it can be distressing and, in some cases, very embarrassing. Lots of people with facial redness go through life not really knowing what it is, that it can be treated or even being aware that without treatment it is likely to get steadily worse. It is important to pay attention to facial redness, excessive flushing, and spots and to understand their cause. It cannot be assumed to be caused by age, food or allergies and expected to go away.
