What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition, usually occurring on the face, which normally affects fair-skinned but may affect all skin types in people aged 40 to 60 years old.

It is more common in women but when affecting men, it may be more severe.

It is a chronic condition, and can persist for a long time and, in any individual, the severity tends to fluctuate.

Rosacea tends to affect the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose, and normally presents by persistent redness caused by dilated blood vessels, small bumps, and pus-filled spots like acne.

In addition, there may also be uncomfortable inflammation of the surface of the eyes and eyelids.

What causes Rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is not clearly known. Genetics, immune system factors, and environmental factors may all play a part. Factors that trigger rosacea cause the blood vessels in the skin of the face to enlarge (dilate).

Rosacea is not contagious.

There are several triggers that may make rosacea worse. These include alcohol, exercise, high and low temperatures, hot drinks, spicy foods, and stress. Rosacea can also be sun sensitive.

Is Rosacea hereditary?

There is no clear genetic link, but Rosacea does seem to run in some families.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

Rosacea normally starts with a tendency to blush very easily, as this progresses central areas of the face can appear to be a deep shade of red permanently, with dilated blood vessels and pus-filled spots.

Quite often there can be swelling of your facial skin especially around your eyes.

An overproduction by the oil secreting glands on your nose can cause the nose to become bulbous, enlarged, and red, this is called rhinophyma.

Rhinophyma is more common in men than women.

Living with Rosacea.

Like many other skin conditions, rosacea is not life threatening. However, due to the affect it has on personal appearance, it can be distressing and, in some cases, very embarrassing. Lots of people with facial redness go through life not really knowing what it is, that it can be treated or even being aware that without treatment it is likely to get steadily worse. It is important to pay attention to facial redness, excessive flushing, and spots and to understand their cause. It cannot be assumed to be caused by age, food or allergies and expected to go away.
